BUILDING SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS

Women's Community Revitalization Project provides comprehensive services to support WCRP families and others in achieving personal, financial and family goals. By building long-term, trusting relationships with WCRP families,we encourage each individual to find and follow her own path to success. The Supportive Services program helps families:

• Resolve family emergencies and crises quickly and with compassion
• Find training, education and employment opportunities to increase economic security
• Strengthen their ability to nurture and care for themselves
• Access services and programs that serve low-income women and families
• Build strong and supportive community that enhances the quality of life
• Develop leadership skills to participate meaningfully on WCRP's Board, Committees and in other community activities
• Understand their rights and responsibilities as tenants and support them in resolving property management issues

A NETWORK OF SUPPORT

Once a family has moved into one of our housing developments, Supportive Services staff works with them to create a plan to define goals and make them a reality. Without judgement, we encourage each tenant to achieve goals that s/he has set for herself. Our role is to identify the resources to help families realize these goals and to offer counseling, referrals and guidance.

We maintain a comprehensive network of resources, over 250 agencies, referring our families to quality services. WCRP also has it's own emergency fund, The Karen Donnally Family Emergency Fund, for families facing personal crises that require immediate attention. Because of our success, owners of other affordable housing developments have invited WCRP to provide our comprehensive services to their tenants.

A PATH TO LEADERSHIP

Norma Garcia, Former Resident of WCRP Housing

When Norma Garcia came to WCRP, she was stuck in an abusive relationship, her daughter was too depressed to go to school, and she didn't have a good place to live. Within days of coming across our office, Norma's life started to change. "They were all family; they opened their doors to me. Before I met Maria and Nora, I had been afraid of going to anybody about the abuse."

Norma left her abusive relationship, and with the support of WCRP bought her own house. Norma's daughter also became active in leadership development. "My daughter is involved in community work, and she'll be graduating college soon".

Case Study:

Building Community

We help our families carry out their own projects to build supportive and welcoming communities:

• Afterschool Program: Residents of one development expressed interest in starting an afterschool program. WCRP helped three mothers raise money, connect with needed resources and get the program running.
• Sewing Circle: Eight residents started a sewing and support group. We assisted them in raising funds to purchase machines and fabric and also connected them with a sewing instructor.
• Celebrations: With two community rooms available for tenant use, our families often hold celebrations, community gatherings, and holiday parties.
